PerilAUS: Our database of natural hazards in Australia

PerilAUS is a database of impacts and consequences of natural hazards in Australia, which has been used to better understand natural peril risks and provide evidence for public safety policies.

For over three decades, Risk Frontiers’ staff have collected data from a wide variety of newspaper and official sources, focusing on natural hazard incidence, human health and built environment impacts, insurance losses, event analyses, damage indices and risk assessments. In recent years the Bushfire and Natural Hazards Cooperative Research Centre has supported its further development.

PerilAUS holds records on natural hazard impacts in Australia from European settlement (1788), but with good confidence from 1900. It has been used to inform risk communication and public safety strategies for emergency services across Australia. It has also spawned some 24 peer-reviewed scientific articles.
