Chief Geoscientist

Paul Somerville

Paul is Chief Geoscientist at Risk Frontiers, where he builds earthquake loss models and provides advice on earthquake hazards and risks for the insurance industry and other clients.

He is also Principal Seismologist for AECOM, where he does research and development on earthquake source and strong ground motion prediction models. These models are used in seismic hazard analyses for the design and analysis of major dams, buildings, bridges and power generation facilities in many countries, including Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Japan.

Paul is currently President of the Australian Earthquake Engineering Society (AEES), a member of the National Seismic Hazard Assessment 2018 Project Science Advisory Panel for updating the seismic hazard map used in the Australian Building Code (AS1170.4), and a member of the update committee for the ANCOLD seismic guidelines for dams in Australia. He also spent two years as a Visiting Research Fellow at the Earthquake Research Institute, University of Tokyo.

He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Geophysics from the University of New England, and his Master of Science and PhD degrees in Geophysics at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.
