Critical Infrastructure Disruption

Understanding the vulnerabilities of essential transportation networks is key to supporting response during and recovery following a natural disaster. Current research efforts on transportation networks mostly focus on their optimisation and robustness to random failure or to targeted attacks. While important, this is not particularly helpful for understanding the spatially distributed impacts of many natural perils. With this in mind and using the Tokyo Subway network as a case study mind, Emma Singh’s PhD studies are exploring how mathematical graph-theory can be used to predict service disruption during network failure caused by natural disasters.
